Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
The Rainbow Trout
The Rainbow trout is not native to the British isles, originating instead from the Pacific coast of North America and being introduced for sport in many parts of the world at the beginning of the 20th Century. The Rainbow trout is usually more silvery than the brown trout and somewhat more thick set, it has black as opposed to the red spots of the brown and it sports a pink irridescence along its flank. It is this colouration that leads to its name. Being a stocked fish only, they are commonly found in sizes that exceed what might be the norm were they self sustaining in the UK.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout live a relatively short natural life span wherever they are found, this being around 3 to 4 years and they will put on weight more quickly than brown trout. This is one of the reasons for their sporting attraction and their suitability to rearing for the table. In a small handful of sites in the British Isles rainbow trout have successfully spawned on a regular basis and established a "natural" population. Spawning seems to occur February to March and in the usual manner of salmonids. Rainbow trout also adopt migratory behaviour, dropping downstream to saltwater whence they become Steelhead Trout. In Britain this tendency leads to problems with escapees, either for the manager of a lake who wishes to retain the stock or a problem for connecting streams that hold native fish. The same issue of escapees has to be addressed by the fish farms that produce the rainbow trout and managers have to go to considerable lengths to contain rainbows. However there are no significant returns of rainbows back to freshwater as steelhead in the UK.

n Britain where rainbows and browns are found in the same waters, the rainbows may adopt more aggressively a niche of surface feeding and can be regarded as easier to catch. In waters where native browns are self sustaining, many streams and upland lakes, the increased levels of stocked rainbow trout can reduce food for browns that must overwinter. They are also known to consume the eggs of browns. It is for these and other reasons that Rainbow trout are ideally suited for the many excellent man made fisheries and not suited to natural waters that have native trout.

In terms of fishing methods there is no great difference from the brown trout. Wet flies, dries, nymphs and lures will work well for both species in most cases. Rainbow trout in small stillwaters are ideal for observing rise forms and feeding behaviour and for much of the year nymphing is a deadly method. Such waters demand careful understanding of entomology and the semi-naturalised fish can become quite wary and selective. As such it is increasingly common to try a wide range of fly methods developed in the various branches of trout fishing as a whole. It is this accumulating of knowledge that adds to the skill and attraction of rainbow trout fishing.
