Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Loch Style - Drifts
On arriving at a Loch the anglers should think through their plans. Where will they start and how will the wind be used to full advantage? What if the wind turns or freshens up? How should they take each drift and how should they minimise disturbance of each drift on the way? Normally one would move well upwind depending on the size of the loch to the area selected for a drift that is most distant. This means that the anglers can make their way back to the jetty with less effort and should the wind get very strong they will not be fighting back through the waves.

On lochs it is often the case that the best fishing is in between islands, across shallower rocky areas and along banks, around weed beds and downwind of areas where streams enter the Loch. Don't move through the drift itself when preparing to drift the same spot. Instead it is best to circle round, away from areas you wish to drift. It is also advisable not to bang the bottom of the boat. It is too often the case to hear anglers moaning about small fish when unbeknown to them their clattering has driven a big fish away with a tell tale wake. Try to use the outboard only to get to spots and then use the oars around holding spots or to move to nearer drifts. I guarantee your bag will be better.

Loch style is correctly practised with a long rod of around 11 feet, this is for a good reason, it enables the flies to be managed towards the angler in a very controlled manner and to dabble the flies much more easily as the boat drifts forward. A long rod is easier nowadays with the light rod materials. The rod should be rated for a light line of AFTM 6 or less. The best approach is to allow the boat to drift without a drogue unless the wind is strong. This means more area can be regularly covered and drogues do not have to be dragged in and out. A short cast is made of around 7 - 10 yards and the flies are firstly retrieved slowly for a few seconds before being drawn back quickly while also lifting the rod gradually.

When the flies appear close to the boat the rod is lifted quite high to allow the top fly called the 'bob' fly to pause and twitch in/on the surface or create a small wake before lifting off to cast again. The light line and long rod allow even quite light winds to help give natural movements to the flies and it makes lifting off to cast easier. Loch style fishing should be fluid and is a pleasurable art. The whole process is designed as one, involving the movement of the boat , the way brown trout hold in areas, the wind and movement of the rod. Anchoring up is very tempting but much less productive on true lochs.
