Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Loch Style fly Fishing - Background
This is a particular form of fly fishing stemming from the traditions of angling from a drifting boat on large upland lakes holding native brown trout, sea trout and salmon. It has become popular again and undergone various modifications from the original art, mainly to cater for rainbow trout fishing in Lowland waters.

It is a popular discipline in fly fishing competitions and has an international rule book governing conduct. The pure form of this method can still be found in the Northern Highlands of Scotland and parts of Western Ireland. In its traditional form a boat which sits well in the water and of about 14 to 16 feet in length is used and the boat is allowed to drift across known fish lies. A certain amount of planning and knowledge of the water is necessary. Depending on the direction of the wind, the boat is positioned to give a good drift in terms of distance and likely numbers of fish drifted over. Normally the boat would be guided by a ghillie who would select the drift and position the boat at the beginning of the drift, making adjustments with the oars occasionally to keep the boat broadside to the wind and over holding areas. The ghillie would then also be able to pull on the oars to rapidly move the boat away at the end of a drift or to avoid obstructions. This is useful because most good drifts are over rocky and shallow areas or close to islands and banks.

Sadly, over the years many ghillies have lost their jobs with changing fashions and notably with widespread ownership and use of outboard motors. However, this has brought loch style to more people and nowadays it is more common to see two anglers or even a single angler taking on the various tasks described above themselves. This does demand a certain amount of caution particularly if you are fishing an unfamiliar water and where there are obstructions it pays for two anglers to take turns at being ghillie.
