However, there are times when the fish seem to prefer this method and North Country fast flowing rivers can abound in quick taking browns who seem to prefer this approach to upstream. Luckily fish don't read books, they certainly don't use computers! To fish downstream: Rub the line with fullers earth to encourage it to sink slightly. Fish the nearer bank first and work out to the far bank. Keep low and use any cover. If you have to wade move your feet slowly, avoid creating a wake and banging and grinding rocks. When you cast on the forward stroke and the rod comes down just twitch the tip side to side and it will impart a series of waves in the line as it lands on the water. This way the differing currents take longer to drag the flies unnaturally as the flow first has to take up the waves in the line. Don't cast directly downstream instead cast across slightly and let your flies move with the stream or twitch them very slightly as they fish down. As the line straightens, having come round in the current, let it pause in the water then feed out a foot of line and gently edge the flies back a foot or so before re-casting. Fish often take at this point. Fish tend to hook themselves when fishing the downstream method and hard striking is to be avoided.
