Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Haunts in a Trout Stream
In November the fish are engaged in spawning in the higher reaches of the stream but in January and February they then return downsteam to pools and slow flowing water to rest. In March they re-appear in gravelly shallow areas and at the sides or tail of easy currents. While in April they will take up a feeding pattern and well defined territories. The larger fish tend to take up residence where most of the better items of food can be gained first. Again, it is a case of developing an extra sense of where you would live if you were a fish, where food can go or be trapped or lingers.

In the season the lies include: -
- At features of the river especially behind or in front of stones.
- In the hang of a stream, where the smooth water ends before entering a rapid run.
- Where two currents of water meet.
- At the sides of stickles and currents.
- In small bays and pools made by the current.
- In shaded areas.
- Behind and between weed patches.
- Where tributaries enter.
- Under bridges.
- At the foot of waterfalls.
