Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Light
Trout have no eyelids and dislike continuous bright sunlight. Light rays enter the water and are reflected from the bottom of the stream. The fish then view the underwater fly against the reflection. The sun's rays also heat the water as a consequence of heating the bottom of the stream. A dark bottom will heat more readily.

A good breeze breaks up the surface of the water diffusing the light, oxygenating the water and disguising the anglers line. The position of the sun is key to the right approach to the water. The preferred position is when the light is both to the side and behind the angler at an angle of 40%.
