Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Fishing Conditions
A breeze that causes a ripple is an important feature but changeable gusting conditions can put fish down and make casting tricky. With rapidly rising or falling water fishing can be poor. The second day after a flood is usually best as the water clears. Fishing tends to be better when the water temperature is warmer than the air. The time before a storm puts fish down but immediately after a rain storm can be good if the above conditions are held. There is often a rise of fish after a change in light, the sun peeping out or just going in.

A typical trout stream

Fishing is generally best when the light is dull and diffused for when there are gleams of sunshine and sunny spells between clouds. A bright glare indicates poor conditions. A steady or rising barometer tends to be best for fishing. In rising water fish look for food in the middle of the stream. In flood or bright weather the fish go to the sides, under banks and bushes. In a gentle wind fish move to the bank where the flies are blown. In stronger wind they will find places where the insects collect such as the lee side of bushes, trees, fences and walls.

At a waterfall one method, if all else fails, is to float a bushy fly in the eddies at the sides of the falling water.
