Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Access to Fisheries
There is a perception, amongst some, that fly fishing in the UK is very restricted and expensive. Certainly on some beats of the most famous rivers this is so, however the vast majority of waters are accessible at very reasonable terms to sensible anglers. Some explanation is necessary of different routes of access.

In the UK many fisheries are preserved for members of clubs, especially natural fisheries such as rivers in England and Wales. In the last two decade there has been an enormous increase in man-made lakes which has enabled new entrants to fly fishing and also helped to take some pressure off natural fisheries and native trout near more populated areas. Many of these stillwater fisheries are outstanding, set in scenic surroundings and with stocked fish such as rainbow trout, and nearly all can be accessed by visitors on a day ticket basis. So successful has this sector been that many experienced anglers use these new fisheries as their mainstream sport.

Man and woman fishing

At other times the fly fisher wishes to access other fisheries such as rivers. In many rural areas there are stretches of river made available to visitors by clubs, landowners, pubs, hotels and water authorities. Some of these waters as well as the many stillwaters are listed in this website. In the remoter areas such as Scotland and parts of Wales and Northern England, a surprising number of good trout waters are available at very low fees, or for free. There is no substitute, when casting wider for fishing trips, to the effort of asking locally and studying the form. There really is excellent fishing for anyone from any background in the UK so long as they are courteous committed sportsmen.

The fly fisherman who wants to widen his access has many routes available while he continues to enjoy the many excellent stillwaters. The main option is to apply to a club that looks after the waters you are interested in. The vast majority of clubs are inexpensive to join, costing around £30 to £200 per year, a few are less than £30, some are more than £200, but not massively so. It can be seen therefore that fly fishing must be one of the cheapest sports in the British Isles.

Trout are a finite resource and some clubs have waiting lists, usually these are the clubs that have very good waters but have to deal with limited points of access and large demand close by. While a waiting list might be frustrating to some, the alternatives are far worse, such as fees so high as to limit everyone except the richest, or a lack of rules that leads to serious degradation of the fishery. A few clubs manage this problem with local residency rules but such clubs are more likely to want to provide some visitor tickets to compensate. However many clubs can be joined without waiting and even those that can't usually have waiting lists of around one to two years – merely a season or two to brush up your technique on the many day ticket waters.

Fly fishing is a challenging skill that brings man closer to nature and his origins and can provide a lifetime of enjoyment, learning and friendships.
