Fly Fishing Tips and Techniques
Approaching the Water
Fly fishing will be most productive if, as the hunter that you are, you understand nature and your role within it. Take pride in the art and skills of your sport. Observe the world around you: the behavior of animals, changes in plants and insects, the flow of the water and the nature of lakes. The angler can embrace everything that it is to be alive, what he learns from the history of his sport, the geology of the locations he visits, the habits and cycles.

When fly fishing for brown trout in a stream or lake take the time to assess its nature. Rushing straight in to fish detracts from what can be learnt and the subsequent better fishing that might be had. Look for likely spots and lies that trout may take. Consider the position of bushes, rocks, stickles and currents and also the fences and walls that man has constructed. Look for flies on the water and be aware that the behaviour of birds can aid in this intelligence. Find out whether fish are rising and try to deduce what they may be taking. Consider the effects of the weather and the direction of light and wind.

Consider the angle from which you may best fish to the trout and whether to fish a stream up or down. Think about the next step after each cast, the next pool you may fish and how best to approach it. Keep low and move slowly. Follow some basic rules: Get into the habit of approaching the water carefully and casting overland. Work out a longer cast later. Many fish hold close to banks and are caught in the first few careful casts. Wading is a last resort not a first resort. Remember also that wading can damage insect life as well as driving fish away. Wading can also be dangerous and every year lives are lost. Keep out of sight and use cover if possible. Tread softly and don't allow your shadow to fall on the water. Note where the trout are rising and try to keep downstream or behind the feeding direction of fish. Cast the fly to the most recent rise, in front or upstream of the rise.
